Superjeep the Golden Circle & Langjökull Glacier
Touring the Golden Circle is a must for any trip to Iceland. Superjeep takes the classic Golden Circle tour to the next level by adding on an off-road excursion to Langjökull, the second largest glacier in the land. Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss make up the main stops along the Golden Circle route. Taken altogether, they encompass much of the natural and human heritage of Iceland. The Superjeep Golden Circle and Langjökull tour turns the usual Golden Circle tour into something extraordinary.
Golden Circle
To take a Superjeep along the Golden Circle route is to take a trip through the history of Iceland. The first stop you’ll make is at Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park where you can stand in the rift valley formed by the gradual separation of two tectonic plates along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Thingvellir is also the birthplace of Iceland’s democracy and the place where Viking-era laws were made and justice was handed down.
Hop back into the Superjeep and head into Haukadalur (Hawk Valley) where you’ll find Geysir geothermal area. You will find geothermal activity all over Iceland but there is an especially high and powerful concentration of geothermal activity at Geysir geothermal area. Superheated water comes from deep within the earth and steams in eerily colored pools. All around you are the sounds of gurgling and boiling water and the unique smell of mineral rich waters. Of course there is Geysir, the somewhat dormant mother of all geysers and Strokkur, the geyser that reliably erupts every few minutes, shooting hot water high into the air.
To round out the main sights of the Golden Circle, a stop at Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is in order. This majestic waterfall has appeared in more than one feature film and is one of, if not the, most photographed waterfall in Iceland. Coming in at 32 meters tall, this churning natural wonder falls down two tiers into a rocky gorge. Enjoy the view from the path that goes from the top to the bottom of the falls and then get a bite to eat at Gullfoss Cafe.
Langjökull Glacier
After taking in the sights of the Golden Circle, it will be time to put the Superjeep to good use. Leaving paved roads behind, the giant tires on this lifted wonder of a vehicle will take you up a highland track toward Langjökull (Long Glacier). Once there, you’ll have amazing views of the highlands and the glacier itself.
Faxi Waterfall
Before heading back to Reykjavík, you’ll keep to the off-road tracks, riding through the rough highland terrain to Faxi waterfall. While not as large or powerful as Gullfoss this waterfall is charming in its own right. A tiny island sits in the river just below the falls and there is even a salmon ladder. If you visit during spawning season, you might even get to see some salmon “climbing” the ladder.
Let Superjeep take you on the classic Icelandic tour with a dash of off-roading adventure.
